Award for merits in the field of occupational skin protection

Krefeld Skin Protection Prize conferred on GD-member professor Dr. med. Thomas L. Diepgen

The speaker of the GD Task Force “Licht.Hautkrebs.Prävention” (Light.Skin Cancer.Prevention) professor Dr. med. Thomas L. Diepgen from the department Sozialmedizin, Berufs- und Umweltdermatologie (Social Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Dermatology) at the University Clinical Center Heidelberg has been awarded with the “Krefeld Hautschutzpreis” (Skin Protection Prize). The conferment of the prize was on 22 June 2004 in the course of the 7th Krefeld Skin Protection Day.

Besides pathbreaking scientific publications, Diepgen has also cooperated in national regulations focusing on occupational skin protection. Also on international basis, the dermatologist is considered as recognized expert in this field. Thus he has been recently elected president of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD).

Among his outstanding works is an operational intervention study which has been realized in cooperation with the industrial physician Dr. med. Anne Schmidt and the GD-President Dr. Joachim Kresken (published in Arbeitsmedizin, Sozialmedizin und Umweltmedizin (Occupational Medicine, Social and Environmental Medicine) 39, 2004, 307-314). The results of this study show that the prevalence of occupationally conditioned hand eczema can be significantly decreased by establishing of a skin protection program in a company and corresponding training of the employees. Moreover, new and valuable findings for future prevention strategies in companies with skin-straining activities could be gained: apart from the provision of appropriate skin protection, skin cleansing and skin care products the motivation and continuous instruction of the employees is of decisive significance for the success.

The Krefeld Skin Protection Prize is posted by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Berufs- und Umweltdermatologie (ABD) (Working Group for Occupational and Environmental Dermatology) and is endowed this year with 5.000 Euro for the first time. The prize money is donated by the Degussa affiliate Stockhausen GmbH – promoting the scientific progress in the field of occupational skin protection for many years.
