Risk Assessment and Regulatory Affairs

New GD Department Set to Work with Ambitious Projects

Following the departments Dermatopharmacology, Dermatotherapy, Dermocosmetics and Extemporaneous Preparations already established some time ago, the recently founded GD department Risk Assessment and Regulatory Affairs has also taken up its work. Its tasks will comprise safety-toxicological and regulatory questions on dermatics, medicinal products, cosmetics and chemicals. First definite project of the group is the drawing up of a statement and organization of a symposium on Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH), the central part of the new European chemical legislation.

In the course of the constituting meeting of the department in Cologne on 7 October 2005 the pharmacist Dr. Jürgen Regenold, Badenweiler was elected department head. Regenold is considered to be an expert in the field of drug authorization; he represents thus an essential section of the future department work. The same applies to pharmacist Dr. Usfeya Muazzam who acts for the Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte (BfArM) (Federal Institute for Drugs and Medicinal Products) within the department.

Other members of the department are concerned in different functions with the safety assessment of cosmetics, cosmetical raw materials and other chemicals in their professional sphere. One of them is the toxicologist Dr. Richard Vogel of Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR) (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment), Berlin, who has been elected acting department head jointly with the physician Dr. Hans-Udo Krächter, Cognis GmbH.

The recently established GD department Risk Assessment and Regulatory Affairs is - as all other departments of the GD - composed of interdisciplinary members. At the constituting meeting pharmacist Dr. Jürgen Regenold (center) was elected department head, deputies are physician Dr. Hans-Udo Krächter (left) and toxicologist Dr. Richard Vogel (right).
